Hello: I came from seminary (supportive community) East Coast, and two years of CPE residency (tight, tough, supportive community) West Coast, to Iowa and a small spiritual care department in a mid-sized hospital, grieving the loss this first hard year, like you in Orlando. It is difficult and challenging, and has brought some lonely, confusing moments. My community has come to be, surprisingly, the frail elderly in two nursing homes where I serve 20 of my 40 hours. We are planting flowers together today. We bring each other joy, company, and solace as we move on through life, blessed with small graces.

No, I think I've seen your first book, and it wasn't about animals. It was a book of page after page of cursive "e's," written by child with a lot to say and only one letter with which to say it. Hmm. Maybe it was about animals, who am I to say?

I think I really understood that you were a WRITER when I saw that early document.

As one who is taking leave, retiring from a seminary faculty position after 11 years, this is a wonderful gift to carry in my heart over the next days. I am reminded that Jesus says in John, that "If I do not go, the Spirit will not come." These are hopeful reflections for me in the transition. Thank you.
