I read An Interrupted Life, Etty's diaries, almost 20 years ago. It has been one of the two or three most moving and lingering and haunting books I have ever read. There is a section in which she expresses her understanding that God cannot help her; that she must help God. She vows that day by day she will keep alight the bit of God that is in her. If only all of us would do that. The reference to the guards' faces and her understanding that we are created in the image of God reminds me of the a Midrash which says that each of us is surrounded by a throng of angels who proclaim, "Make way for the image of God." What would our world be like if we believed that? What would our world be like if we lived it?

that was so beautiful - and humbling. this woman suffered so much and yet she was still willing to see the image of God in those who were her enemies.....may we all have such strength and grace in the face of darkness - especially our own.....thank you!
