Day 1/Ash Wednesday: Rend Your Heart

Yet even now, says the Lord, return to me with all your heart,
with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning;
rend your hearts and not your clothing.

—Joel 2.12-13

Reflection for Wednesday, February 22 (Day 1 of Lent)

Rend Your Heart
A Blessing for Ash Wednesday

To receive this blessing,
all you have to do
is let your heart break.
Let it crack open.
Let it fall apart
so that you can see
its secret chambers,
the hidden spaces
where you have hesitated
to go.

Your entire life
is here, inscribed whole
upon your heart’s walls:
every path taken
or left behind,
every face you turned toward
or turned away,
every word spoken in love
or in rage,
every line of your life
you would prefer to leave
in shadow,
every story that shimmers
with treasures known
and those you have yet
to find.

It could take you days
to wander these rooms.
Forty, at least.

And so let this be
a season for wandering,
for trusting the breaking,
for tracing the rupture
that will return you

to the One who waits,
who watches,
who works within
the rending
to make your heart
whole.

Jan, I now realize it is superfluous for me to receive these daily blogs re: Lent by e-mail. I have your website on my Desktop at all times and I will wait and follow along with you on the exact days of Lent. Thank you so much for offering this.

I’d love to use your Reflection in our Diocese Newsletter, if you are amenable to that. I’ll make sure there’s a pointer to this website, and give you the credit…

    Jan –
I’m preparing to preach on Psalm 51 for Ash Wednesday. Your poem summerizes what I’ve been hearing the Holy Spirit speak through that psalm. I will continue to use your poem as a meditation for my daily Lenten journey. Thank you for your inspiration.

    Hello Jan

my friend Asta introduced me to your beautiful, inspiring and deepening website. I’d love to share your Ash Wednesday blessing with our congregation tomorrow night. I’ve been thinking about the space we can find during Lent to explore ourselves and our relationship with God and each other, and your blessing encourages us to do just that. Thankyou. Lynda

    Hello Jan,
This year we are diving deeply into Lent with a full day of Ash Wednesday services (6:30am, 11:30am, and 7pm) plus a continuous Ash Wednesday Prayer Experience from 10am-9pm. We’ve borrowed the prayer labyrinth from St. Luke’s UMC and have other prayer stations for persons to explore. With your permission, we would love to use the blessing Rend Your Heart as the meditation persons read before walking the prayer labyrinth. Thank you again and again for being a vessel and path for God’s grace and power. – Lisa <
