Beloved friends, today is the day! It is a bittersweet joy to announce the release of Sparrow: A Book of Life and Death and Life. I am so pleased to say that in celebration of this day, I sat down with my amazing friend and editor, Christianne Squires, to record a conversation about Sparrow to share with you. In this video, you’ll hear about how Sparrow came to be, what makes it different from my other books, and how grief is the least linear thing I know. (Spoiler alert: also one of the most graced.) (For my email subscribers: If you don’t see the video player, click here to go to The Painted Prayerbook, where you can view it in this post.)
For info and to order Sparrow in hardcover or as an eBook, visit janrichardson.com/books. Many thanks to all who have already placed an order! If you live outside the United States, please know that you can order books directly from my website. We are always happy to ship internationally.
Please note that if you’re ordering through Amazon, they might show a significant delay in the delivery date. This is likely due to Covid-19 delays. While we don’t expect it will take as long as they might indicate, you can always order via the Books page on my website, and it will be shipped promptly. For immediate access, you can order Sparrow as an eBook.
On this Sparrow release day, I am so grateful for the graces you bring to the path and for your companionship that has helped make this day possible. I am sending so many blessings for you.

I discovered that grief and grace are my constant companions, in varying degrees. It’s been 6 years since my beloved husband died. And probably 5 since I made that discovery.

I just watched your wonderful interview on Facebook, Jan. I am so very eager to read “Sparrow,” which, I’m told, will be delivered today. You have been such a support for me along the way. I don’t often talk to Lou, but I do write him letters, as you did with Gary. Not as frequently now as I did during that first year. He visits me in dreams more now (almost 4 years after his death). Warmest congratulations on the launch of “Sparrow!” Thank you for sharing your heart with us.

When I checked my bank account this morning, I saw a charge to Kobo, and thought, “I haven’t bought anything, what’s going on?” Then looked in my Kobo account and found Sparrow!

I believe what we’re going through today in our country (and world) in this time of COVID-19 is grief-filled…and I agree with Jan (and Wayne Muller who said the same thing in one of his postings recently) that grief is definitely not linear…and we are living in a time when we’re grieving “lost time” or our old normal…even church is different (Praise God!)…we are living in a New Now; with hope we continue to walk in this liminal time — a Sabbath to be well-experienced…I am of the age (81) of losing friends — just this week a dear friend (95) passed after long bouts of differing medical issues — We’ve been separated for years by miles, gratefully not by technology…and I will miss her dearly…I too am looking forward to Jan’s book — should be here in day or so — and have shared from afar some of your grief; your journey is long and hard and hopeful — sometimes all at same time. Thanks for your interview! Blessings

Jan, Looking forward to reading Sparrow. I am part of a small gather of women and we refer to your book “Sanctuary of Women” often. Your writing rings true for us. Thank you for your heartfelt work. Ginger
